L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) in skin care :
UV radiation, smoking, and other environmental pollutants can wreak havoc on your skin. The body protects itself naturally from these reactive oxygen species (ROS) by using antioxidants to neutralize them before they cause damage to skin cells. L-ascorbic acid is one of the most effective anti-oxidants used in the skin and is the first line of defense against free radicals. In addition to its water-soluble activity in the skin, it is also known to be a primary replenisher of vitamin E, the most efficient inhibitor of lipid peroxidation in cell membranes. Research has shown that oral administration of L-ascorbic acid does not produce adequate enough levels in skin tissue for these antioxidant effects to take place. Therefore, we must apply L-ascorbic acid topically on the skin to provide this benefit. However, there are some important factors to consider in choosing the correct Vitamin C product!
